President's Message
It is my distinct pleasure to serve on the Board of Directors for Alzheimer's Texas. We stand ready to provide the highest possible levels of support to the Central Texas residents we are honored to serve.
Sincerely,
Rita Hortenstine, President
Mission Statement
To eliminate Alzheimer's disease and related disorders through the advancement of research and to enhance care and support for individuals, their families, and caregivers.
Vision Statement
To create and sustain a dementia capable Texas in which persons with Alzheimer’s and related disorders, and their families, receive quality care, effective treatments, and meaningful support.
The Need
It is estimated 350,000 people in Texas have Alzheimer’s disease. This is projected to quadruple by 2030. 80% of care for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease is provided in the home, usually by an aging spouse or an adult child. Individuals with Alzheimer’s disease require increasingly comprehensive care for 3 to 20, or more years. Alzheimer’s disease costs Americans over $100 billion annually.
The Response
In the absence of a cure or effective therapy for Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, the best and only ‘medicine’ is good care. That requires working with families in a close, interactive, and personal relationship that takes time and compassion. As Austin and the surrounding areas continue to grow, we anticipate that the demand for our services will expand exponentially. The Board of Directors is working to build the infrastructure necessary to increase services as the need grows.
